Widespread glacial erosion on the Scandinavian passive margin

چکیده

Abstract The topography in Scandinavia features enigmatic high-elevation low-relief plateau regions dissected by deep valleys and fjords. These have long been interpreted as relict landforms of a preglacial origin, whereas recent studies suggest they modified significantly glacial periglacial denudation. We used late Pliocene–Quaternary source-to-sink analyses to untangle this scientific conundrum. compared glacier-derived offshore sediment volumes with estimates erosion onshore fjords on the inner shelf. Our results that valley fjord falls 61%–66% short sink volume. Erosion shelf cannot accommodate mismatch, implying entire Scandinavian landscape adjacent experienced significant erosion.

Timescales of methane seepage on the Norwegian margin following collapse of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet

Gas hydrates stored on continental shelves are susceptible to dissociation triggered by environmental changes. Knowledge of the timescales of gas hydrate dissociation and subsequent methane release are critical in understanding the impact of marine gas hydrates on the ocean-atmosphere system. Here we report a methane efflux chronology from five sites, at depths of 220-400 m, in the southwest Ba...

Impact of glacial erosion on Be concentrations in fluvial sediments of the Marsyandi catchment, central Nepal

[1] Several processes contribute to denudation in high-mountain environments. Of these, glacial erosion is particularly difficult to constrain, despite its critical importance in the evolution of many mountain ranges. In this study, we present a new data set of Be concentrations in fluvial sediments sampled along the Marsyandi River and its main tributaries in central Nepal. We interpret the Be...

Adaptation and niche construction in human prehistory: a case study from the southern Scandinavian Late Glacial.

The niche construction model postulates that human bio-social evolution is composed of three inheritance domains, genetic, cultural and ecological, linked by feedback selection. This paper argues that many kinds of archaeological data can serve as proxies for human niche construction processes, and presents a method for investigating specific niche construction hypotheses. To illustrate this me...

Deglaciation and glacial erosion: A joint control on magma productivity by continental unloading

Glacial-interglacial cycles affect the processes through which water and rocks are redistributed across the Earth’s surface, thereby linking the solid Earth and climate dynamics. Regional and global scale studies suggest that continental lithospheric unloading due to ice melting during the transition to interglacials leads to increased continental magmatic, volcanic, and degassing activity. Suc...
